Carthage, one of the principal capitals of the ancient Mediterranean, has been since the beginning of the nineteenth century the object of innumerable archaeological excavations and topographic research. Two principal periods have marked the history of research on this site, the period of the French protectorate (1881-1956) and the international “Save Carthage” campaign launched by UNESCO (1972-1992).
Today, managing the textual, photographic and planimetric data from the site has become a priority for understanding of the topography of the city. This GIS of the Punic and Roman city provides a precious tool for its research, conservation and management. It provides a map of the archaeological data and a database of the evidence, facilitating the study of the topographic evolution of the city.
The international team coordinated by Hamden Ben Romdhane (INP-Tunis), Christophe Batardy (ENS-Paris) and Elizabeth Fentress (NAHAN), will be open to all archaeologists who have directed or contributed to archaeological work on the site of Carthage.
